Comprehensive welfare services for Sri Lankan workers and their families

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kuwait is committed to the welfare and well-being of all Sri Lankan nationals in Kuwait. Our Welfare Section provides a range of social, financial, and psychological support services to help workers and their families navigate challenges abroad.

Counselling & Emotional Support

Trained welfare officers provide confidential counselling for workers experiencing stress, family problems, or workplace difficulties.

Financial Assistance

Limited emergency financial aid is available for workers in genuine hardship, including funding for food, transport, and medical needs.

The Embassy organises cultural events, community gatherings, and awareness programs to keep Sri Lankan workers connected to their heritage.

Information on vocational training opportunities, language classes, and skills development programs available to workers in Kuwait.

Family Liaison

Assistance with communicating with family members in Sri Lanka during emergencies, and coordination with SLBFE family support units.

Death & Remains Repatriation

Complete support for families when a Sri Lankan national passes away in Kuwait, including documentation, coordinating with authorities, and repatriation of remains.

Financial Aid & Relief

In cases of genuine hardship, the Embassy may provide limited financial assistance to Sri Lankan nationals in Kuwait. This aid is provided on a case-by-case basis and is supplementary to support available through the SLBFE Welfare Fund.

Eligible Situations

  • Workers stranded without income due to employer abandonment
  • Medical emergencies not covered by employer insurance
  • Workers awaiting repatriation who lack funds for daily needs
  • Individuals who have escaped abusive employment situations
  • Emergency food and shelter provision

Financial assistance from the Embassy is a loan and may be subject to recovery upon return to Sri Lanka through SLBFE. Please speak with a welfare officer for full details.

Support for Domestic Workers

Sri Lankan domestic workers form a significant part of the Sri Lankan community in Kuwait. The Embassy has dedicated programs to support this vulnerable group.

Support Available

  • Pre-departure awareness sessions (coordinated with SLBFE)
  • Assistance recovering withheld documents and passports
  • Mediation with employers over contract disputes
  • Safe shelter for workers who have left abusive employers
  • Coordination with Kuwait authorities on labour violations

Know Your Rights

  • Your employer cannot confiscate your passport — it is illegal
  • You are entitled to one day off per week
  • You must receive the salary stated in your contract
  • You have the right to communicate with the Embassy at any time
  • You cannot be forced to work beyond your agreed hours
